If you’re feeling bored and restless, you’re not alone.
Regardless of the reason for feeling like your life is on pause, there are a few things you can do to re-enter the world as a more authentic version of yourself who is ready to achieve their goals. Consider these ideas from Yoga With Maria and feel free to add your own ideas to this list as you see fit. »
Learn a New Skill
You don’t have to enroll in a painting tutorial at the local library or sign up for a hot yoga class to learn something new (though you certainly can if you want to). Use online platforms such as Coursera, Udemy, and MasterClass to educate yourself on a myriad of topics. Many of these are completely free. Learning something new can recharge your mental health. Your brain will thank you for investing in yourself whether you are simply trying to get out of a mental rut or planning to enroll in a university program to further your career. (P.S. Youtube also has accessible videos from those same websites!)
Change Careers, Find a new Hobby – or Launch a New Business!
>>We spend a big percentage of our lives at work, so if you’re stuck at a job you can’t stand, it’s definitely time for a change somewhere in your life. If you are looking for a career change, you can start by using this free resume builder to highlight your skills and then see what’s out there. While there are plenty of jobs available, finding the right one takes time, so be persistent but also be patient. Remember, it’s always a good idea to have another job lined up before you quit your present one.
>>You could also try finding something else in your life that motivates you, that inspires you, and adds to your life enough to find balance and to find what makes you happy. Maybe a passion project, or starting a new hobby. What are some of the things you remember doing that have ever brought you joy? Or is there something you’ve always wanted to try? It is never too late!
>>Another option is to go into business for yourself. It’s a big step and you should do your best to prepare yourself by creating a business plan that outlines your plans for your company (even if you are your only staff member at this point) and describes how you will sell your product or services. Use this time to assess how much money you will need to start your business. You should also list in detail how you will seek funding, if necessary, for your business — and what these funds will be put towards after you launch. Include financial projections for the first quarter, the first year, and beyond. You can use this document to attract investors, land partnerships, and crystalize your own plans for your venture.
Engage in the Type of Rest You Need
Did you know that there is more than one type of rest? According to medical experts, sleep and physical rest are the most obvious — but your body and brain need more to recharge. If you’re not getting enough mental rest, creative rest, or emotional rest, you may find yourself feeling irritable and exhausted regardless of how much sleep or downtime you’re getting.
If you have additional sensory needs, you’ll need to build this type of rest into your schedule as well. This may mean taking a break from constant electronic stimulation, wearing noise-canceling headphones in crowded, noisy areas, or installing different lighting in your home that doesn’t strain your eyes.
Budget Differently to Free Up Money
Talking about money is often a major source of stress in households. You likely already have a monthly or weekly budget. Is it working for you? If it isn’t, or if you always feel strapped for cash, you may want to take a second look at your finances. Consider other ways to free up extra money each month such as refinancing your home. This move can reduce your monthly mortgage payment and allow you to take advantage of lower interest rates.
Everyone feels stuck from time to time, and these situations are often not completely in our control. Focus on what you can control and use the tips above as a launching pad toward the next chapter of your life.
